Underthrusting of the Tarim Lithosphere Beneath the Western Kunlun Range, Insights From Seismic Profiling Evidence

چکیده

Uplift of the western Kunlun range results from Indian indentation into Eurasia and induced underthrusting Tarim lithosphere. This keeps pace with migration foreland basin. The basin-scale sequences provide a decipherable record migration. To quantify underthrusting, we analyzed ∼323.2-km-long seismic profile crossing middle segment foreland. We traced reflectors to investigate architecture assigned ages by correlating them dated outcropping sections. consist four layers. lowermost Layer 1 starts lap on preforeland unit at ∼40 Ma, indicating that Cenozoic initiated slightly prior Ma. 2 shows large sharp step northward exceed forebulge ∼25 suggesting modern geomorphology Basin took shape. southwestern boundary 4 migrates northeastwards fold row relative 3. gradual retreat reflector terminations ∼30 Ma suggests lithosphere is viscoelastic. linear fitting forelandward envelop termination sites since indicates underthrusted an average rate ∼8.18 mm/yr. comprises shortening ∼3.8–5.7 mm/yr latitudinal propagation ∼4.4–2.5 abrupt increase in sedimentation ∼11 had reached its current elevation.

Is the Asian lithosphere underthrusting beneath northeastern Tibetan Plateau? Insights from seismic receiver functions

a r t i c l e i n f o a b s t r a c t Keywords: lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary Northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau Receiver functions Whether or not the Asian lithosphere has underthrusted beneath the Tibetan Plateau is important for understanding the mechanisms of the plateau's growth. Using data from the permanent seismic stations in northeastern Tibetan Plateau, we studied seismic...

Seismic imaging of the downwelling Indian lithosphere beneath central Tibet.

A tomographic image of the upper mantle beneath central Tibet from INDEPTH data has revealed a subvertical high-velocity zone from approximately 100- to approximately 400-kilometers depth, located approximately south of the Bangong-Nujiang Suture. We interpret this zone to be downwelling Indian mantle lithosphere. This additional lithosphere would account for the total amount of shortening in t...

Imaging Pacific lithosphere seismic discontinuities—Insights from SS precursor modeling

Oceanic lithosphere provides an ideal location to decipher the nature of the lithosphere-asthenosphere system which is vital to our understanding of plate tectonics. It is well established that oceanic lithosphere cools, thickens, and subsides as it ages according to the conductive cooling models. Yet this simple realization fails to explain various observations. For example, old oceanic lithos...

Piecewise delamination of Moroccan lithosphere from beneath the Atlas Mountains

The elevation of the intracontinental Atlas Mountains of Morocco and surrounding regions requires a mantle component of buoyancy, and there is consensus that this buoyancy results from an abnormally thin lithosphere. Lithospheric delamination under the Atlas Mountains and thermal erosion caused by upwelling mantle have each been suggested as thinning mechanisms. We use seismic tomography to ima...
